Is Search Engine Optimization right for your business? Well, the honest answer is it all depends on your business and market.
Let’s review what Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is and then I’ll explain what I mean. SEO is the process of getting your online content (typically web pages) found by the search engines and ultimately ranked well for the keywords (terms that people use to search when they look online for stuff) that are related to what you offer. So let’s say you own a Chevy dealership in Dallas, Texas. Some of your keywords might be Dallas Chevy Dealership, 2012 Chevy Volt Dallas, and 2012 Camaro Prices – really anything a prospective buyer might type in to find what you sell.
SEO is perfect for businesses that have a good percentage of their buyers using the Internet to search for their products and services or even for information related to those potential purchases – and let’s face it, the number of people using the Internet to shop and make purchases is continuing to grow.
SEO is NOT a good choice for a business offering services to a market that is mostly not online and/or doesn’t use the Internet as a tool for finding products and services. An example of this is certain niches within the senior market. Although more and more senior citizens are getting online, certain subsets of them still don’t search prolifically and don’t use the Internet as a means of finding products and services.
Another example is a new product or service that solves a problem that people don’t yet know that they have. Innovative products or services like these may have to build awareness of the need first since people won’t search to solve a problem that they don’t yet know that they have. Apple comes to mind here. There is a ton of search volume around the iPhone and iPad, but that’s because people have been educated on their need for smartphones and tablet computers via other marketing methods.
Sometimes these products or services can be optimized for existing or related search terms and still get favorable results, but often SEO is secondary to the broader marketing for these types of businesses.
